The typhoon went right over Kagoshima overnight and we just had to stay put in the hotel. By the time rain stopped it was already in the afternoon. Public transport was resuming service so we headed out for lunch and then a short visit to Sakurajima (桜島), the island opposite Kagoshima with an active volcano.
- TV news showing the path of the typhoon. Kagoshima is on the bottom left.
- Kagoshima station. A ferris wheel in the middle of town!
- Delicious deep fried pork fillet, using the local breed Kagoshima Black.
- Taking the tram to the pier for Sakurajima Ferry.
- No other passenger. With the typhoon just past, it’s still quiet everywhere.
- By the pier. Sakurajima is not too far away.
- Ferry terminal. No other tourist.
- Top obscured by clouds.
- On Sakurajima.
- The foot bath park. On the right were seats with warm water running in the middle.
- Lava park.
- There’s no rain by then but wind was still very strong.
- Tenmonkan (天文館), the main shopping / restaurant area in Kagoshima.
- We found another restaurant for deep fried pork fillet.
- And we regretted it – the one we had for lunch was much better.
It was a short day, and Sakurajima still looked gloomy in the aftermath of the typhoon. But we were glad it was over.
