The Sanin region mainly refers to the prefectures Shimane (島根県) and Tottori (鳥取県), which aren’t really well known tourist destinations. Getting off the beaten tracks is of course always an attraction to us, but our decision to go there this time actually started from an interest to try out the increasingly rare overnight train journey in Japan.
Having said that, Sanin certainly has its share of great places to visit – the sand dunes in Tottori, and the Izumo Shrine (出雲大社) in Shimane, one of the most important shrines in Japan.
